Strategies for Tackling the Climate Crisis through Criminal Law

Extreme weather conditions caused by climate change have strengthened the intensity and scale of natural disasters and demonstrated that ‘no corner of the globe is immune from the devastating consequences of climate change.’ Climate change does not only affect the daily lives of people but also serves as one of the key factors causing conflicts in both developed and developing countries. The Doomsday clock is ticking and swift actions must be taken to tackle the climate crisis. As an effort to address climate change, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. The conference established the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). With its first meeting in Berlin in 1995, the Conference of the Parties (COP) has taken place yearly and has produced the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 and the Paris Agreement in 2015. Against this backdrop, the KICJ will host its 8th International Forum and invites experts from academia and practitioners to discuss if formal criminal investigations, trials, and imposition of criminal sanctions can contribute to the tackling the challenge of the climate crisis and whether criminal law is an appropriate medium for approaching the climate crisis.
